August, 2026The massive build-out of AI-capable data centers is in my opinion likely facilitating more than just physical surveillance; it is arguably establishing the physical and computational foundation for a transition to Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and a fully digitized, programmable monetary system.
The transition from traditional banking to a CBDC framework requires managing high-velocity, real-time ledgers where every transaction is validated instantly. Unlike retail banking, which operates on legacy settlement cycles, a nationwide digital currency requires a robust, hyper-scale cloud architecture—exactly the capacity currently being built for AI. These data centers provide the compute necessary to validate every transactional node in a centralized, programmable economy.
When agentic AI capabilities are integrated with financial transaction data, the AI agentic loop gains a new vector: the ability to correlate physical movement (via camera/sensor telemetry) with financial activity (via real-time digital currency ledgers). This creates a closed-loop system where individual "threat scores" could be directly tied to financial access, effectively automating the enforcement of socioeconomic policy.
The ability to program digital currency—limiting its use, restricting geographical movement, or automating taxes and fines at the point of sale—offers a mechanism for institutional control that traditional cash-based economies lack. AI data centers provide the necessary "intelligence" to manage these conditional-use assets at scale, effectively turning the monetary system into a subset of the surveillance apparatus.
The final outcome of this structural transition is the solidification of Digital Feudalism, a concept central to Emad Mostaque’s The Last Economy. In his analysis, this is the "default" future trajectory—the outcome that occurs if we change nothing. We are moving toward a future where a handful of corporations control the AI and the compute power—the means of intelligence—while the rest of humanity is relegated to a state of dependency.
Mostaque argues that as artificial intelligence turns human intellect into an abundant commodity, the scarcity-based economic systems we rely on will process this abundance as collapse. Digital Feudalism emerges as the path of least resistance: a world where the majority lives on universal basic income—enough to survive, but not enough to influence the system—effectively becoming users and consumers rather than citizens and creators.
The advantage held by these institutions is computational. They understand the AI-surveillance-monetary infrastructure better than the governments meant to regulate it. The massive data centers currently being built across the country are the literal, physical manifestation of this enclosure. They are the walls of the new digital manor, and the agents running inside them are the gatekeepers.
By automating cognitive labor, the system renders traditional human contributions to the economy obsolete. When the data center manages both the "threat probability" of a citizen and the digital currency they use to survive, the infrastructure ceases to be a tool for economic growth and becomes a mechanism for totalizing containment.
To resist this "default" trajectory, civil society must shift from reaction to active nucleation—creating protected environments where symbiotic AI systems demonstrate viability.
Progressive municipal leaders should adopt alternative metrics like the MIND Dashboard (measuring Material, Intelligence, Network, and Diversity capitals instead of GDP). This provides a local framework to evaluate policy that prioritizes human flourishing over the extractive metrics of the "Digital Feudal" system.
Cities should explore the implementation of municipal AI agents that serve citizen needs rather than corporate extraction, effectively reclaiming the "compute" power for local public goods. By pooling resources through "AI cooperatives," communities can create localized, symbiotic AI systems that operate outside the centralized surveillance-financial loop.
We are currently inside a "Thousand-Day Window"—a roughly three-year period during which "meaningful choice" remains possible before this phase transition becomes irreversible.
The clock is running, and the water is beginning to boil. The goal is not necessarily to prevent all aspects of Digital Feudalism, but to create viable, crystallized alternatives that demonstrate better possibilities. When the next economic or systemic crisis creates an opening for change, we must ensure the blueprints—for symbiotic economies, for municipal governance, and for human-centric AI—are ready.
